KIM WATERS
KIM WATERS released his 12th and 13th albums in 2001-02. His growth, both musically and in his number of fans, has been nothing short of phenomenal. Kim has played with everybody from new jack swing pioneer, Teddy Riley to Mr. “Hot Buttered Soul” himself, Isaac Hayes, to the late vocalist Phyllis Hyman and highly regarded pianist Cyrus Chestnut. Soul, R&B, traditional jazz, and contemporary jazz are all an integral part of Kim’s background and his music. And, the connecting thread in all of this is evoked by one word from Kim: Melody. Listen to “In The House” from the CD “One Special Moment” and to “Rock The Boat” from the “Streetwise” CD to gain a partial insight into Kim’s diversity. WHis versatility has been expressed since picking up the violin at age 9. At age 13, he moved to alto and soprano sax. Over his eight-album career atarlock, he sold hundreds of thousands of copies of more R & B centered work. Then at Shanachie, he moved into contemporary jazz where his airplay, sales and in-person performances have demonstrated a rapidly growing fan base. His contemporary jazz album tracks continue to top the national radio and sales charts. His 2002 release “Someone To Love You” hit top 5 contemporary jazz (Billboard), and hit the top hundred “R&B/Hip Hop”(Billboard). His collection of hip hop hits, done in inimitable Kim Waters style, was top hundred “R&B/Hip Hop” (Billboard) and the track “Rock The Boat” went top 25 radio A/C Urban. Kim, in concert, can croon a sultry ballad, rev up a soulful dance number, thrill both straight-ahead and contemporary jazz fans, and get down right funky with the best. Underneath his contemporary, laid-back persona, is a throwback to the sax greats from back in the day. On tour, he is a crowd pleaser, giving the audience a wonderful experience through his cool stage presence and awesome sets filled with songs so popular that the fans recognize them within the first few notes. |
